Dr. Elijah E. McGee grew up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi,
and graduated from L.J. Rowan High School in that city.
He received a B.A. Degree in Political Science (Cum
Laude) from Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, Mississippi,
and went on to earn a M. Div Degree from Garrett-Evangelical
Theological Seminary. In 1987 he was awarded an Honorary
Doctor of Divinity Degree from Rust College, Holly Springs,
Mississippi.
From June 1997 to June 2008, McGee served as Associate
Director, Tennessee Conference Connectional Ministries,
and from 1997-2007 he was pastor of the Ebenezer United
Methodist Church, Nolensville, Tennessee. Before coming
to the Conference job, he was District Superintendent
of the Cumberland District. He has served as pastor
of Gordon Memorial United Methodist Church in Nashville,
St. Paul United Methodist Church in Biloxi, Mississippi,
and St. James UMC in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.. He
also served as an Associate Pastor at Ezion-Mt. Carmel
UMC, Wilmington, Delaware.
Before coming to the Tennessee Annual Conference, McGee
was an active clergy member of the Mississippi Conference
serving as Auxiliary Chaplain of the Keesler Medical
Center in Biloxi and a member of both the Conference
Commission on Religion and Race and the Council on Ministries.
In the Seashore District, he was chairperson of the
Board of Ordained Ministry, member of the District Board
of Missions and District Committee on the District Superintendency.
He was also a Trustee of the Seashore Methodist Assembly
(Retirement Home).
In his years as pastor, he has lead several churches
in construction projects-
an education addition at Ebenezer UMC, a new parsonage
at Gordon Memorial, and a new edifice at St. Paul UMC
in Biloxi, MS. While at Gordon Memorial over 300 persons
were added to the church membership.
Within the Tennessee Conference, he has chaired both
the Commission on Religion and Race and the Ethnic Minority
Local Church Committee. He has served as a member of
the Conference Commission on Equitable Salaries, the
Board of Ordained Ministry, the Work Area on Worship,
the Work Area on Evangelism, and the Committee on Merger.
He has also been on the Nashville District Board of
Ordained Ministry and the District Committee on Finance.
Elijah E. McGee is married to the former Sheila Woods
of Biloxi, Mississippi.
